You ever have one of those days when everything is off? You’re mad about nothing and frustrated about everything and counting down the minutes until 5:00?
Like Alexander in the children’s book, we’ve run into our fair share of Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Days. And it feels like they are more frequent than ever — perhaps because we’re all simultaneously dealing with a global pandemic on top of all the “regular” work and family and life stress that existed before.
We don’t have a great solution to bad days — but we do have a suggestion.
When you’re mad at the world, tell your team.
Because those eyes shooting daggers? They aren’t hiding behind your Zoom screen as well as you think they are. And that monotone annoyed voice? Yeah, that’s not too sneaky either.
So instead of pretending, try saying, “Hey. I’m having a bad day. Sorry if I get frustrated — it’s not about you.”
It’s honest and vulnerable and gives your team permission to have bad days, too. Because, spoiler, this is wildly hard for all of us.
